3 FILS: THE MODERN ASIAN

3 Fils is one of the best indies in Dubai.

Where are we off to today then?

Jumeirah Fishing Harbour. We’re going to eat at 3 Fils, a multi-award-winning modern Asian restaurant with Japanese touches here and there.

What does the name mean?

Sadly, not the average cost of dishes but instead a play on how the three owners – two Emiratis and chef/founder Akmal Anuar – each give their ‘two cent’s worth’ to the restaurant strategy.

Ooh, it’s cute.

Yep, looks a bit like a European hipster coffee shop, right? There’s only room for about 40 people and you can’t book so just turn up and hope for a table.

What shall we start with?

Let’s order the addictive seaweed salad, a sushi roll, salmon nigiri and some sashimi.

I’m getting the Japanese vibe here. This stuff is delicious – so colourful, neat and tidy and fresh.

The chef insists on only using the finest products from the best suppliers.

Why have they brought us a bowl of charcoal? Are we cooking the next dish ourselves?

No, it’s a dumpling filled with mushy, fried aubergine inside. Make sure you eat the dumplings and not the charcoal – you don’t want to spend the afternoon in the dentist’s chair.

Good tip, thanks. Wait – are those chicken wings?

Yes! These are my favourite. They’re smothered in a sticky, garlic soy glaze. The waiter will give you a pair of black latex gloves if you don’t want to get sticky fingers.

Nah, it’s alright, I’m booked in for a manicure tonight anyway.

Well, all that fishing does take its toll on the cuticles.
