There are awards and then there are the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards. Arguably the most prestigious of all, it is a true achievement to be handed a silver Neptune, yachting’s equivalent of an Oscar.

This year, the award for ‘Best Naval Architecture Semi-Displacement /Planing Motor Yachts’ went to Dominator’s 28M Ilumen Zalanka, the first time in its 20 year history that the shipyard had been recognised by the Boat International judges. “It’s a great honour for us to be on the stage together with megayacht builders and to see that the “Mamba Mentality” of our team is paying off,” commented Dominator’s CEO, Angela Pernsteiner. “Playing in this highly competitive environment as a small boutique yard and being the first to develop a disruptive new series with innovative materials and a unique naval architecture takes a strong core team that is ready to sacrifice everything for the success of one common vision: to believe in yourself and in the new idea.

“We are proud to stay original and keep the authentic, boutique family spirit of our brand DNA and let the world copy us.”

CONTRADICTIONS

Andrea Agrusta, Head Engineer of the Dominator Ilumen series is the man behind the design, working with Dominator’s engineers to create a hull that has the style of a sports coupé with superyacht levels of space. “With its innovative design, style, comfort and livability as well as technological innovations, and performance, the 28M Ilumen series is a planning yacht with the comfort and stability of a semi displacement,” commented Agrusta.

“The 28M’s upscale high-tech construction in post-cured glass and carbon fiber mixed with epoxy resin offers an unprecedented level of customisation in a small size.

“The enhanced safety and comfort that the double-bottom hull with integrated structural tanks offers, is additionally reflected in the 10 years structural warranty that the builder gives to the Owner for ‘extra peace of mind.”

Agrusta’s hard chine, bulbous bow design is also extremely efficient, allowing Zalanka to reach a top speed of 22 knots with a pair of 1,200hp, MAN turbo diesels. Using the big V8’s torque, she only drinks 50 litres per hour (total for both engines) to sail at 10 knots. She will also use 90litres per hour at 11 knots and 117 litres per hour at 12 knots. Range wise, a 10 knot cruise  speed allows the 28M to travel 1,500 nautical miles, and with noise levels below contractual specifications: 55 db in the main salon, 46 db in the Owner’s cabin and 53 db in the lower deck at a cruise speed of 11.5 knots.

These are hugely impressive numbers and a testament to the Dominator team, who build superyachts not because they have to, but because they want to. With Dominator’s flagship 42M being designed with the same dedication and attention to detail, we expect more Nemos to be awarded to the shipyard in the years to come.
