Every yacht build begins with an Owner’s dream and ends with a carefully chosen name. It’s here on the transom that a yacht’s character can be defined. A name can be humorous, mystifying, descriptive or personal and some names fit a yacht perfectly, as does the script on the transom of the Dominator Ilumen here in front of us in the Bulgari Marina and Yacht Club. Hanaa is an Arabic word which translates as happiness, bliss and felicity, a fitting name for this beautiful motor yacht.
We’re dockside with Dominator’s delivery captain, Nebojsa Sajkic, and Hanna’s Captain Volcan, both of whom know this Ilumen inside and out. Hanaa is hull number three of the Ilumen range and the first 28M to make the journey to Dubai. With the YACHTS team also having spent some time at both the Fano shipyard and the official launch in Monaco, we are also well acquainted with the Italian-designed and-built motor yacht, and today is like visiting an old friend.
Dominator, being a family run shipyard with CEO Angela Pernsteiner at the helm, has the ability to turn an Owner’s wish into reality. Although the phrase “full custom” is not used very often in the sub 30 metre range, Sajkic explains that it is quite possible not only to specify colourways, materials and furnishings, but also the yacht’s layout, propulsion system, hull type, performance parameters and personal cruising speed. “All Ilumen’s are built to the Owner’s requests,” comments the delivery captain. “If he wants extra space in his suite, we can relocate the day head from the foyer and extend the bedroom.” Owners are particularly encouraged to participate in their Ilumen’s creation, allowing them to shape their dream yacht’s interior.
One area that simply doesn’t need changing is the Ilumen’s exterior – head of design, Alberto Mancini, has seen to that, creating a silhouette like no other on the water. The 28M is a unique mix of arrow-like swages and swooping arcs, which brought together, create a look which is half superyacht, half spaceship. Mancini’s work is more than just skin deep though, as he worked closely with head of hydrodynamics and engineering, Andrea Agusta, making sure Hanaa can cut through the waves as impressively as she cuts a dash in the marina.
Owners are particularly encouraged to participate in their Ilumen’s creation, allowing them to shape their dream yacht’s interior.
Despite her futuristic styling, it’s the Ilumen’s interior that really captures the imagination, with Hanaa featuring a main salon and Owner’s suite on the main deck and a four-cabin layout below deck. Here, splashes of fresh orange Hermès fabrics are used throughout, combining with wood and leather to create a luxurious ambience with superyacht undertones. This feeling of class is most evident in the master suite, with the panoramic view allowing the Owner to gaze out onto the seascape from any place in the expansive cabin. Light also flows in through the moonroof, with the forward glazing sliding open to reveal a very private terrace with a set of table and chairs. For a 28 metre yacht, there’s an incredible amount of space here, which is explained somewhat by the Ilumen’s relatively high freeboard.
Heading back up through Hanaa’s foyer, we pass through the wheelhouse and up to the flybridge. Again, space is immediately noticeable up here, as is the commanding view. With the sunroof open, it feels like a much larger yacht and we particularly like the hardtop’s strut treatment, with a Dominator logo reminding guests of what motor yacht they’re on.

It’s a great feeling to be on a brand-new yacht that the Owner has brought home to the Emirates. It also strengthens the relationship with the shipyard, as there are now a number of other Dominator models here in the Middle East. “With the delivery of Hanaa to a local owner, it is the perfect time to revive the long-established strengths and values of the Dominator brand and craftsmanship in the Middle East,” commented Angela Pernsteiner, Dominator’s CEO. “After the introduction of the Ilumen concept by the industry’s first Virtual Reality experience at the Dubai International Boat Show a while ago, the arrival of the first Ilumen is an an important strategic step for us. With European construction and design expertise and established local network, the Owner is the perfect bridge between the two cultures and a wonderful brand ambassador of the bespoke Dominator Ilumen philosophy. Joint events in Kuwait and Oman will follow the successful launch in Dubai.” And yes, Hanaa will be on show at DIBS, where no doubt she will live up to her name and charm a new set of admirers.
