BMW: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

You know that excited feeling when you’re in the cinema, the lights dim, and the big screen comes to life with a deep bass boom showcasing the theatre’s surround sound system? This BMW i7 delivers that same experience, and as it’s the M-sport-orientated M70 model, it can also match the legendary Ferrari F40 to the sprint to 100 km/h. That’s an incredible mix of capabilities, executed impeccably by the all-electric BMW i7 M70.

TECH SHOWCASE

Featuring BMW’s My Modes, the electric 7 Series has an emotion to match your mood. If you’ve got a long drive ahead, then Relax Mode and Digital Art Mode create a serene cruising ambiance offering calming imagery, peaceful sounds, darkened display settings, and soothing massage functionality. In a hurry? Then Sport mode boosts acceleration, engine sound, interior lighting and handling. Choosing Efficient Mode lets drivers benefit from intelligent, automatic energy-saving measures like ECO PRO driver settings, ECO air conditioning, and efficient light settings. However, it’s the i7’s Theatre Mode that truly stands out.

Once selected, roller sunblinds lower on the rear and side windows creating a dark, cinema-like atmosphere as the panoramic roof blind closes and the 31.3-inch panoramic display descends from the roof. This 8K-resolution behemoth can be used to stream films or series via the built-in Amazon Fire TV and the personal eSIM using 5G connectivity. Sound comes courtesy of a 39-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, essentially turning the i7 into your very own mobile VOX Cinema. However, it’s not just the M70’s passengers that get to experience a top performance, as thanks to two electric motors, the M70 is not only a technological tour de force, it’s also astonishingly quick.

POWER HOUSE

Electric drive is the perfect match for high-end luxury cars such as the i7. Start up is completely silent, as is the initial drive and on the move the only thing you’ll hear is the air conditioning blower (but only if you have it set at level three or above). Acceleration is also silent, and thanks to a pair of electric motors that generate 485 kW (660hp), the big BMW can launch from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. That’s just half the story though, as the M70’s motors produce a colossal 749 lb-ft of torque (811 lb-ft when you click the boost lever to the left of the steering wheel), resulting in instant acceleration at any road speed.

A surprising result of 1,100 Nm of torque is that the 5.4 metre long luxury saloon can be hustled along effortlessly and could even be described as ‘nippy’ around town. Despite its size, the i7 feels tight and responsive, with a supremely comfortable driving position that encourages the driver to make the most of the M70s massive performance. Range depends on how much fun you want in Sport mode, but select Eco and you can cover over 550 kilometres on a single charge.
